The Effects of Meditation Program Combining Mindfulness and Compassion Meditation on Emotional State of Chronic Inpatients with Schizophrenia : Pilot Study

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of meditation program combining mindfulness and compassion meditation on schizophrenic inpatients.

Method : The meditation group was composed of 15 inpatients with schizophrenia and control group was composed of 13 schizophrenic inpatients. The meditation group received 16 sessions of mindfulness plus compassion meditation over 8 weeks. Assessment was done using Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Symptom Checklist-90-Revision- Depression (SCL-90-Depression),SymptomChecklist-90-Revision-Anxiety (SCL-90-Anxiety),SymptomChecklist-90-Revision-Interpersonal sensitivity(SCL-90-Interpersonal sensitivity) and Nurses¡¯ observation Scale for Inpatient Evaluation (NOSIE) at the beginning and end of this period. After ruling out patients with change of antipsychotics during that period, there remained 11 patients among the meditation group and 9 patients among the control group.

Results : After 16 sessions of meditation, the patients showed a significant improvement in the SCL-90-Depression. There were no significant changes on the PANSS, SCL-90-Anxiety, SCL-90-Interpersonal sensitivity and NOSIE.

Conclusion : These results suggest that mindfulness meditation combined with compassion meditation can make a useful contribution in the improvement of depression of chronic schizophrenic inpatients.
